FA confirm Northern League rivals must play again after Vase match abandoned

The Football Association have confirmed that the abandoned FA Vase tie between EBAC Northern League clubs South Shields and Morpeth Town will be replayed “on or before this coming Saturday”.

There were eighty two minutes on the clock in the original fixture between the two sides when, seconds after Liam Henderson put the visitors 4-2 up, the floodlights went out at Mariners Park.

They say “good things come to those who wait”, well whoever “they” are, have been proven right in the case of Morpeth Town boss Nicky Gray.

The EBAC Northern League side finally got to play their eagerly-anticipated FA Vase Third Round tie against South Shields at the ninth attempt on Wednesday night, after a combination of heavy snow, frosty pitches and constant rain put paid to the previous eight attempts.

And once the tie was finally played, it did not disappoint.

Ben Sayer’s late strike ended any hopes of a positive result as Bedlington Terriers were narrowly edged out by Morpeth Town at Craik Park.

Sean Taylor handed the hosts the lead inside the first 12 minutes of the contest, the visitors responded well and were rewarded four minutes before half-time.

Stephen Little equalised with a towering header and it looked like a draw was inevitable until Sayer found the bottom corner after 82 minutes.  (more…)
