It looked like the Stan would break the curse of never getting a point from Team North in the Northern League but the students snatched an undeserved injury time winner. Saturday 26 December 2016

On a cold and windy, but sunny boxing day morning a crowd of 135 turned out to see the Stan end 2016 with a home win. There were few Xmas jumpers on show but lots of new club hats as the Stan fielded an unchanged side from the one that thumped Darlington RA 8-0 last Saturday.  (more…)

Saturday 17th December 2016

The last game before Christmas saw manager Derek Thompson revert to a 4-4-2 with James, Fulcher and Holland replacing Williams, Johnson and Robinson. The loss of leading scorer Robinson was a massive blow as Blackett was also still missing meaning reliance on Yates and Jones up front. Right Back Ali Stoddart was making his 100th Northern League Appearance for the club. The visitors, in relegation trouble but buoyant from a win at Crook last week, included Dan Pigg and Chris Tarn who have 21 league goals between them this season. The pitch, which had caused the last 2 games to be postponed, looked heavy and started to cut up from kick off.  (more…)

Norton and Stockton Ancients 1-3 Heaton Stannington

Sat 19th November 2016

The Stan Army braved the freezing conditions for the trip to Norton and were rewarded with a fine 3 – 1 win although it was to be a sad day for Norton and not just because of the result. The win, which was the 9th from 14 away league games, was well deserved but hard fought as a spirited Norton pinned the Stan back for long periods in the final quarter. The Stan lined up in their Orange shirts with four changes from the previous defeat at Hebburn with James, Errington, Johnson and Walton replacing Dixon, Williams, Bailey and Blackett. Jack Errington was making his debut for the Stan after signing from Newcastle Benfield and the former Burnley centre half stepped straight into the side as Graham Williams was suspended. (more…)

Hebburn Town 1-0 Heaton Stannington

Saturday 5 November 2016

The Stan made the short trip across the Tyne for an intriguing clash with the 2nd division’s form team. The Stan were looking to improve on their impressive 8 away wins from 12 league games but knew it would be tough against a side with 6 straight league wins behind them. Manager Derek Thompson made 2 changes from the rout over Ryton with Wear and Fulcher replacing McCabe and Johnson. Walton returned to bench but there was no place for the suspended Leighton. The hosts were without regular scorer Channon North but included on the bench former Mansfield and Rochdale midfielder Adam Rundle who signed from West Auckland. Hebburn, looking to avenge one goal defeats in the last two corresponding fixtures, kicked off in the rain on a decent looking pitch that was sure to cut up. Both sides took a while to get to grips with the wet conditions with Hebburn’s Blackburn caught offside 3 times before Feasey shot wide for the hosts from 20 yards. On 12 minutes the Stan forced a corner and after the keeper fumbled, Blackett had a shot blocked on the line. They then went even closer to breaking the deadlock when Wear released Deagle down the left and his superb strike crashed against the inside of the post and into the arms of the keeper. The Stan’s good spell of pressure continued and on 20 minutes Robinson robbed the keeper but his shot from a tight angle was easily cleared off the line, Hebburn responded with a Free Kick from 25 yards which Smith fumbled but retrieved on the goal line. As the half progressed the hosts got the upper hand but Wiliams and Wear stood firm at the centre of the Stan defence with Smith claiming everything crossed into the box and making a fine block with his right foot as the half came to a close.  (more…)

Heaton Stannington 5-0 Ryton & Crawcrook Albion

Saturday 29 October 2016

After last Saturday’s forgettable home game, the Stan were back on winning ways in the league and are now only 3 points off a promotion spot. There were 2 changes from Tuesday’s Senior Cup win at Alnwick. Although the Stan had a comfortable win, it looked like luck was against them in the 1st minute when Paul Blackett comfortably shot past the Ryton keeper and scored. The ball though hit the break for the portable goal which is located behind the post and bounced back out although the linesman thought it had hit the post and a bemused Stan Army had to wait longer for a goal. The next 10 minutes were quieter with both teams having an attack blocked. In the 11th minute, a Ryton long shot saw Smith put the ball over for a corner and from that he caught the incoming ball. A minute later and a Dan Robinson counter attack on the left saw him take his time and position himself, keeping 2 defenders off, and shot to make it 1-0. In the 16th minute, Robinson was through again and the Ryton keeper, Ross Combs, brought him down and was sent off. Paul Blackett took the penalty against substitute keeper Carl Piecha and made it 2-0. After 20 minutes, Deagle shot over and 2 minutes later Smith cleared a Ryton half chance from a corner. In the 28th minute, an attacking Ryton player got to the ball 1st but shot over from close range. In 31 minutes, Robinson passed to Blackett who made it 3-0. In the 35th minute, Ryton had a long-range dipping shot that went just over. The rest of the half was dominated by the Stan with Deagle slicing a shot and then putting another over. Blackett was looking dangerous and in the 44th minute he was brought down in the box but a free kick was given just outside it. Deagle took it and hit a defender, followed by Williams’s header being caught by the keeper. (more…)

 Heaton Stannington 1-3 Crook Town

Saturday 22 October 2016

After another fine away win at Blyth Town in the Ernest Armstrong Cup on Wednesday, hopes were high that the Stan would continue their impressive run at home to struggling Crook Town. But on a day when nothing went right for the Stan they turned in their worst performance of the season and were comfortably beaten 1-3. After giving young squad players a chance at Blyth, manager Derek Thompson relied on a more experienced line up with James, Imray, Walton and Robinson returning. The visitors included ex-Bishop Auckland pair Wood and Grant and handed a debut to ex-Ryhope youngster Mann.  (more…)

Ernest Armstrong 2nd Division Cup 1st Round, Wednesday 19 October 2016

The Stan made their 1st visit to Blyth Town since the seasiders’ promotion to the Northern League and this cup tie definitely had all the excitement of one. There were 4 changes from Saturday including the return of Gary Dixon from injury who had a great game. Blyth gave a debut to forward Malcolm Morien, signed from Dunston. The 1st 10 minutes were played mainly in the Stan half as the home side attacked. Blyth’s 1st real chance though didn’t come until the 8th minute when a forward was 1 on 1 with Smith who blocked him. A Blyth free kick resulted in a corner which was headed across goal. The Stan countered but the home keeper put the ball out and for a throw in before Blackett could get to it and Stoddart then shot wide. The Blyth defence found Blackett’s pace difficult to handle all night and in 11 minutes he sent a great ball into the box but Bailey and Jones were blocked. Both sides were trying to attack but the Stan were now getting more of the ball. In 14 minutes, a sustained Stan attack saw the ball eventually passed to Blackett in the box who was brought down. He took the penalty which was saved by the keeper who judged correctly by diving to his left. The Stan were dominating play and in 19 minutes, after a Jones pass, Blackett was obstructed in the box but nothing was given. In between further Stan attacks, Blyth had a rare attack cleared in 22 minutes. Smith kicked clear in 27 minutes followed by a Blackett run that saw him then blocked. 2 minutes later and another Stan counter attack saw Blackett beat a defender and shoot across goal with the ball going just wide. In the 31st minute, Blyth shot just over and 3 minutes later a Stoddart cross come shot also went just over. After another sustained Blackett attack, Blyth had the ball in the net in 36 minutes but the headed effort was off-side. The last 7 minutes of the half were quieter but saw Smith catching the ball 3 times. (more…)
