Heaton Stannington 4-1 Billingham Synthonia

Saturday 3 December 2016

We are barely into the mammoth run of winter home games that has seen the Stan’s fair share of disappointment first against the physically resolute and disciplined Easington Colliery and the following defeat by a dogged Tow Law side who came with a plan and stuck to it. With the 3rd home game in 8 days against fancied league challenging and 3rd place opposition, you would be forgiven in thinking the Stan might not overturn their current poor home form against the Synners. There were 5 changes from Wednesday night. (more…)

Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup Round 2, Wednesday 7 December 2016

After Saturday’s fantastic win over Billingham Synthonia, the Stan Army were hopeful that the team had shaken off their poor home form and were looking forward to cup success. There was only 1 change from Saturday as the Stan took on a much-changed Terriers team from the one they beat 3-1 in the league in August. (more…)

Wednesday 30 November 2016

On a cold and blustery night, which the opposition from high in the Durham hills should be more used to, there were no excuses though for the Stan as their poor home form continued to contradict their good away form. There was one change from the team that lost at home on Saturday with Wear replacing Williams.  (more…)

Saturday 26 November 2016

The Stan missed a great opportunity to move up the league when they suffered their third home loss of the season after twice being ahead. There were 3 changes from the team that lost at North Shields on Wednesday night including a debut for Josh Holland who has signed from Ryton where he previously played up front along with Dan Robinson. FA Vase : Nelson 1-2 Heaton Stannington (Kevin Mochrie)

Nelson 1-2 Heaton Stannington

FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round: Saturday 10 September 2016

Although more associated with Nelson, victory was the Stan’s as they sailed into the next round of the vase after navigating some choppy water in the 2nd half (that’s the last Nelson pun in this column). There was early pressure from Nelson and when the Stan did have the ball they were rushing too much and not holding onto it, instead relying on long balls. The Stan were getting caught out regularly on their left and it proved fatal in 12 minutes when a home player got by James, ran down the wing and sent a ball into the box. Smith dived and got his fingers to the ball from the initial shot but Jake Townsend slotted the rebound home before a defender could clear. A minute later and Smith sliced a clearance but Williams then cleared for a corner which resulted in Nelson shooting over. In 17 minutes, a free kick by James into the box was headed the wrong way by a defender and Graham Williams got in to shoot and make it 1-1. Nelson immediately attacked followed by a counterattack which somehow saw Robinson deemed offside. (more…)

Heaton Stannington 0-3 Team Northumbria

Saturday 3 September 2016

The Stan’s first home league match of the season saw a top of the table clash with local rivals and league leaders North. There were 3 changes from Monday’s team including a first start for former player Paul Blackett. Both teams started positively with Blackett shooting at North keeper Mundy after 4 minutes. The visitor’s 3rd attack saw a player break free but he shot wide under pressure. In the 12th minute though a ball in from the right, into a crowded box, was flicked into the net by Kevin Carr. From the restart Dixon broke free for the Stan but Mundy blocked him. In the 17th minute, a long ball from Dixon for Robinson saw Mundy get to it first. Blackett then shot wide before Smith had to make 2 catches at the other end. In the 26th minute, Bailey shot from a tight angle across goal but his effort went just wide followed by a corner which resulted in Mundy catching a Blackett effort. Soon after, Blackett had a speculative long shot which went wide, followed by 2 other Stan attacks. In the 33rd minute though Ryan Redford left Antony in the centre circle and ran down the middle. He passed the ball out to the right with it being quickly passed back into the box for the incoming Dan Taggart to slot past Smith. There had been nothing much between the 2 teams, even when it was 1-0, but the 2nd goal now looked 1 too many for the Stan to overcome. They continued to pressurise but most of their attacks broke down. At the other end, Smith made a great save from a long shot in 39 minutes followed quickly by another save and then a catch. 3 minutes before half time Bailey passed to the incoming Blackett who was blocked by Mundy. Robinson got a rebound shot but he was unlucky to see it also blocked. The Stan defence were again under pressure and Smith had to make 2 catches. (more…)

Bedlington Terriers 1-3 Heaton Stannington

Saturday 20 August 2016

The rain was coming down dogs and dogs at Bedlington as the Stan achieved their 1st league win of the season when Heaton Stan Harry and the team tamed the Terriers. There were 3 changes from Wednesday’s team and there was a familiar face (apart from the Captain Haddock beard) in the Bedlington starting 11 in the shape of Jon Wright. (more…)

Billingham Synthonia 2-2 Heaton Stannington

Wednesday 17 August 2016

The Stan went into their third away game on the bounce still looking for their first point and indeed looking for their first league goal. There were 5 changes from last Saturday and a debut from the bench for Joshua Bynoe. It was a lovely August night at the CLS Sports Stadium as the Stan kicked off. Straight away the Synners were on the attack, perhaps sensing the Stan’s defensive frailties, and made several attacks in the first 10 minutes. But the Stan, still licking their wounds from conceding six at Thornaby at the weekend, were holding firm and looking a lot more defensively sound. The first shot on target was by Billingham’s Steel but Matt Smith saved well. On 19 minutes, the Stan left back Philipson went down and Heaton Stan Eva (note the Chelsea reference) had to attend. Dalbeattie Star 3-3 Heaton Stannington (Kevin Mochrie)

Dalbeattie Star 3-3 Heaton Stannington

Saturday 20 July 2016

For the 2nd year in a row, the Stan travelled to Scotland to play Lowland League opposition and the match again ended in an entertaining 3-3 score line. The visit to Islecroft Stadium saw the Stan’s team bus containing more supporters than players as only 12 were available including new keeper Mahamad Shajari. The team took the fixture seriously though and so did Dalbeattie who start their league campaign next Saturday. When it comes to Scotland versus England there is no such thing as a friendly! Fans of both teams were also able to see and hold the FA Cup although some young locals had to be informed that it was the English version and not the Scottish Cup! Of equal curiosity to the Stan army was a contraption that resembled a Hannibal Lecter mask on a long stick which was used to retrieve the ball from a fast flowing stream behind the dugouts. Its effectiveness is such though that only 3 balls have been lost in 30 years! (more…)
