Groundhopper: Musselburgh Athletic 2 Linlithgow Rose 2. (8/5/17). (Malcolm Stephenson)

Musselburgh Athletic 2 Linlithgow Rose 2. (8/5/17).

It was a straightforward journey in the car up the A1 to Musselburgh in East Lothian which is just this side of Edinburgh. I usually prefer the train but it was much cheaper by car for such a short trip.

Musselburgh play in the SJFA East Superleague and their ground is called Olivebank. I was expecting to see some Olive trees at the ground but I do not think our inclement British weather does not allow such luxuries. The club were formed in 1934 and has a capacity for 2,500 with cover for 200 spectators. There are no seats and no floodlights. You enter the ground at one end of the pitch and this area also incorporates the changing rooms, snack bar and toilets. Terraces areas go alongside each side of the pitch to about 2/3rds up the ground. At the far end of the pitch is nothing but a steep grass bank which seemed to double up as the ‘TV Gantry’ with someone filming the game from that advantage point.

Today’s opponents were Linlithgow Rose who had a tremendous run in the Scottish FA cup last season when they reached the 5th round proper. They eventual lost 4-2 up at Ross County. Both teams are struggling in the league this season with them second and third bottom. It was only £5 in but there was a programme albeit one folded sheet of paper. It was in colour but a programme nevertheless.

The game kicked off  at the earlier time of 2.30 pm with the visitors having slightly more possession in the early stages. Rose took the lead on 36 minutes but the home side equalised on 42 mins just before half time, It was a good game with end to end football. As at many a match the referee was not winning many friends with some of his decisions.

On 51 minutes Linlithgow Rose restored their lead but the home side were not giving up. They were rewarded with their efforts on 84 minutes with an equaliser and the game finished 2-2.

For an end of season game there was a good attendance at the match with my estimate at being about 300.

The seasons ground hopping is not over for me yet and i am sure i will find a few more games this month.
