Bedlington Terriers head coach Craig Heward has labelled the 2-0 win over neighbours Ashington as a “superb result” as they seek to avoid relegation this season.

Heward, who joined the coaching staff midway through the season, stated the win was “thoroughly deserved” and he also spoke of the togetherness in the changing room.

“It was a superb result and the lads done exactly what we asked of them,” he said. “They worked hard, got the ball into the right areas and were committed.

“We spoke about that [togetherness] before the game, we are down at the bottom and we need everyone to be pulling in the right direction.

“The lads in there want to do well and today we spoke about togetherness and we pulled through and got the result.”

The coach “couldn’t recall” a save that Dan Staples had to make in the game, stating the Terriers could have arguably scored more than what they actually did.

Bedlington  have to continue to build up momentum says Heward, who also believes the Newcastle Benfield game on Wednesday evening is a “must-win”.

Heward said: “We have to take this momentum into the next game, if we don’t put a performance in on Wednesday then this win against Ashington goes out the window.

“Benfield is a must-win game, they are all must-win games. We have got 14 games left and we are looking to win between six and nine of those.

“We have to perform week in, week out and take it one game at a time.”
