Bedlington Terriers playmaker Tony Stephenson believes the 2-0 win over his former side Ashington in the Wansbeck Derby was “justified” and “well deserved”.

The 27-year-old, who signed from Seaham Red Star, played a pivotal role in the Terriers’ win and he has claimed that it was all down to the way Bedlington “took the game” to their opponents.

“It was well deserved, we took the game to them and we knew the threats,” Stephenson said.

“The first goal was crucial, normally we don’t go in front first, but we did and everyone pulled together for each other and I am over the moon.

“AJ [Andrew Johnson] wasn’t as effective as he normally is, and we stood strong even when they threw the kitchen sink at it at the very end.”

“The management done their homework and to be honest I can’t wait to go out with the lads.”

The Terriers remain second-bottom, but Stephenson says he is confident on avoiding the drop and continuing the momentum onto the next few games.

He said: “The dressing room hasn’t been like that often enough, hopefully it’ll be like that a few more times this season and hopefully now we can use this momentum to pick up more points.

“I am confident on staying up, if I wasn’t I wouldn’t be here and especially after that performance, I think the lads can stay up. The pitch is looking the best it has in a long time so we can now play our way.”
