Stan Up If You Love The Stan: The Editor’s Rant
This afternoon (17/10/15) at Grounsell Park is the nearest home game to the date of the 80th anniversary of the first match at Newton (now Grounsell) Park on 12 October 1935. The ground has seen lots of changes and action since it was a quarry and it is good to see the ground and the Stan still going strong and back in the Northern League. A number of former players are expected to attend today and among them will be our special guest for the day: John Earnshaw. John was a high profile player for the club and he captained the Stan in their second season in the Northern League in 1946-47. Thank you John for making the effort to come today. The anniversary has also attracted a lot of media attention
A bumper crowd witnessed a very early and a very late goal by Jon that saw the Stan defeat West Allotment Celtic 2-1 in the Northumberland Senior Cup a week past Wednesday. The draw for the quarter final has still to be made. Last Saturday the Stan were defeated 3-1 at Ryhope. Enough said about that! There was a low key friendly on Wednesday against Killingworth Station of the Northern Alliance Premier Division. This was to allow Dekka and Geoff to look at some trialists and for some players, including keepers Shaun Backhouse and Dan Rule, to get match practice. The visitors led 1-0 at half time but Gary Dixon, who has just returned to the club, equalised.
On Wednesday night the Stan are at home in the league to Willington. Next Saturday they are away to Stokesley and then a week later on Halloween they are at home to Brandon before trick or treating.
